GIA certificate

The GIA certificate is one of the most important documents in determining the value of a diamond. It is issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) after thoroughly examining the diamond. Each diamond is unique, so this document contains every scratch, incision, and identifier unique to your diamond.

When evaluating diamonds, GIA’s certified gemologists examine each stone with a 10-power microscope. This identifies its unique characteristics, including carat weight, colour, clarity, cut, etc.

The GIA Diamond Appraisal Certificate contains the following information:

  • A unique GIA certificate number is assigned to each diamond graded.
  • Shape and cut. The cut is defined by the angles and proportions of the different facets of the diamond in relation to each other. The proportions of the angles of each facet affect how the diamond reflects light.
  • Dimensions: the length, width, and depth of the diamond, measured in millimetres.
  • The carat weight of the diamond.
  • Colour grade.
  • Clarity grade, defined by the presence of inclusions inside the diamond. When gemologists assess the clarity of a diamond based on the GIA clarity scale, the size, type, number, and position of inclusions are essential.
  • Polishing. When assessing the polish of a diamond, the gemologist will look for any signs of scratches.
  • Symmetry. This affects the overall beauty and appearance of the diamond and determines how light is reflected and refracted in the gem.
  • Fluorescence – the effect of UV light on the diamond. Diamonds with low to medium fluorescence may appear slightly cloudy. Gems that do not show signs of fluorescence are considered more valuable.
  • Proportions – a highly accurate and precise graphical representation of the dimensions of a diamond. Proportions show how a diamond reflects light.
  • Transparency characteristics. This is a diagram or map of all the inclusions seen in a diamond.

We follow all GIA standards of diamond appraisal practice when selecting diamonds. Therefore, everyone will find the diamond that is right for them and that they will enjoy for years.
