How to choose a diamond?

When choosing a diamond, it is important to consider four main criteria, known as the 4Cs: colour, cut, clarity, and carat weight. These determine the value and rarity of a diamond.

Colour has a direct influence on the appearance of the stone. In nature, most white diamonds have a soft yellowish hue. The closer a diamond is to colourless, the rarer it is. To accurately assess the colour of each stone, it is assigned a letter grade from D (colourless) to Z (pale yellow).

The cut determines the beauty and brilliance of the stone. An expertly cut diamond reflects and refracts light to the maximum extent possible, making it exceptionally bright and shiny.

The clarity of a diamond is a measure of the stone’s purity. A diamond is considered flawless if, when magnified ten times with a magnifying glass, no inclusions caused by the formation of the diamond are visible. A large proportion of these are invisible to the naked eye. The higher the clarity grade of a diamond, the more it shines.

Carats refer to the weight of the diamond, which can vary depending on the shape of the stone. The weight in itself does not determine the value of a diamond. For example, the price of two one-carat stones can vary considerably depending on their clarity, colour, and cut. Large diamonds of unsurpassed quality are, therefore, scarce and considered to be extremely valuable.
